Stainless steel is a special kind of metal used all over the world.

It is an iron-based alloy, which means it is a mixture of iron and other elements. This metal is very important because it does not rust easily. People call it by many names like inox or rustless steel. It stays shiny and strong for a long time. This makes it perfect for many different jobs.

How does this metal stay so clean and bright? The secret is a metal called chromium. To be stainless steel, the mixture must have at least 10.5% chromium. This chromium creates a thin, protective layer on the surface. This layer is called a passive film. If the surface gets scratched, the film can actually self-heal using oxygen from the air.

Scientists can also add nickel or molybdenum to make the metal even better. Adding nitrogen can help make the metal stronger and stop tiny pits from forming.

Finding the right recipe for this metal took a long time. In 1798, Louis Vauquelin first showed chromium to a science group in France. Later, in 1821, Pierre Berthier noticed that chromium-iron mixes resisted acid. In 1912, engineers Benno Strauss and Eduard Maurer patented a type called Nirosta. Then, in 1913, Harry Brearley was looking for better gun barrels.

He discovered a special mix in a lab in Sheffield, England. He first called it "rustless steel," but a cutlery maker named it "stainless steel."

There are many different types of stainless steel used today. Some are labeled with a three-digit number from the AISI system. The most common type is called 304. Some types are very strong and can be heat treated. Other types are magnetic, while some, like austenitic steel, are not magnetic at all.

This magnetism depends on how the tiny atoms are arranged inside the metal. Some steels have atoms in a cube shape that allows them to be magnetic.

We see stainless steel in almost every part of our lives. It is used to make forks, spoons, and kitchen sinks.

It is also used for surgical tools and big buildings. Because it is easy to clean, it is great for food and medicine plants. You might even see it in large tanks that carry chemicals. It is a very useful metal that helps keep our world working safely.
