A frying pan is a very useful tool for cooking.

People use it to fry, sear, or brown different kinds of food. Most pans have a flat bottom and sides that flare outwards. They usually have one long handle to help you hold them. Some larger pans even have a second small loop handle. If a pan has higher, more vertical sides, it might be a sauté pan.

These different shapes help cooks handle different types of meals.

How a pan works depends on the metal used to make it. Copper pans move heat very quickly and evenly. This makes them great for sautéing, but they can react with food. To fix this, many copper pans have a tin lining inside. Cast iron pans are different because they hold heat very well. This makes them perfect for searing meat or vegetables.

Carbon steel pans can also develop a special coating called seasoning. This happens when oil is used over time to create a non-stick surface.

People have been using pans for thousands of years. In ancient Mesopotamia, people used pans made of copper.

In ancient Greece, these tools were called teganon. In Rome, they were known as patella or sartago. Before the mid-19th century, people used a pan called a spider. It was made of cast iron and had three legs. These legs let the pan stand up in hot coals and ashes. When kitchen stoves became popular, people started using pans with flat bottoms.

Many new ways to make pans have appeared since then. In 1954, Marc Gregoire patented a way to bond Teflon to aluminum.

This created the non-stick pans we often see today. In 1953, a company called Sunbeam made an electric pan. This pan has a heating part built right into it. It can sit on a counter using heat-insulated legs. It also uses a power cord to help control the temperature.

This makes it easy to cook without a stove.

Today, we even see very high-tech pans in the kitchen. Some pans use diamond particles bonded to a metal base.

These diamond surfaces are very hard and resist scratches. They also help heat move through the pan very quickly. This is great for high-heat cooking like stir-frying. Some modern pans are made of aluminum or stainless steel. These materials are very common in homes and professional kitchens today. Using the right pan makes cooking much easier and more fun.
