People move it using a long paddle. This paddle has blades on both ends. The word kayak comes from the Inuktitut word qajaq. It can mean a hunter's boat.

Long ago, people in the Arctic made these boats. They used wood or whalebone to make a frame. Then, they stretched animal skins over it. These boats were at least 4,000 years old. Each man built his own kayak. He made it fit his own body size. This helped him move easily on the water. To stay dry, paddlers wore a special garment called a tuilik.
