There are three main parts to this work. Commercial fishing is for selling food. This includes wild fish and aquaculture. Aquaculture is a way to farm fish in tanks or ponds. Traditional fishing is done by groups following their own customs. Recreational fishing is done for fun or sport.

Once fish are caught, they must be prepared. This is called fish processing. Workers might fillet the fish or freeze it. Some companies make canned goods. Fish are used for more than just food. We use pearls from shells. Some people use fish parts to make glue or fertilizer.

Many people rely on the sea. Over 500 million people depend on these resources. However, the industry faces big problems. Overfishing happens when too many fish are caught. This can hurt the ocean. In 1974, 90% of fish stocks were at safe levels. By 2021, that number fell to 62.3%.
