technology Maturity 13-18 Next article →

The fishing industry is a huge part of how the world works. It includes many different activities. People catch fish, grow them in farms, and prepare them for eating. This industry also helps move and sell seafood to markets. It is a very important way to provide food for people. Over 500 million people in developing countries rely on it.

This work supports many lives every single day.

There are three main ways people fish. The commercial sector is for making products to sell. This includes wild fishing and aquaculture, which is fish farming. The traditional sector is when groups follow their own customs to fish. Finally, the recreational sector is for sport or fun. People in this group do not sell what they catch.

Each group plays a different role in the ocean.

Once fish are caught, they go through a way it works called processing. First, workers handle the raw fish. This is known as primary processing. They might fillet or freeze the fish for stores. Then, secondary processing happens to make canned or chilled goods. Some companies even have their own fleets of ships. These products are then sold to grocery stores or restaurants.

Fish are used for many things besides just eating. They provide 16% of the protein for people in the world. Some people use pearls or sharkskin for special items. Other parts of fish are used for medicine or glue. For example, fish emulsion is used as a fertilizer. Scientists even use parts like bones and fins for health research.

The sea offers many different kinds of useful materials.

Protecting the ocean is a very big job. In 1974, 90% of fish stocks were at safe levels. By 2021, that number dropped to 62.3%. This happens because of overfishing and climate change. Many countries have disputes over who can fish in certain areas. For example, the "Cod Wars" happened between Iceland and the UK. Now, groups like the Marine Stewardship Council work to help. They help make sure fishing stays sustainable for the future.
