Pomfrets are a type of fish. They belong to a group called Bramidae. This group has 20 different species.

Many people eat these fish. In South Asia, people eat the Brama brama. The meat of the fish is white.

You can find pomfrets in many oceans. They live in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. They also live in the Pacific Ocean. Some live in the Mediterranean Sea. Most species live in the high seas. This means they live in open water.

Some types live near the edge of land. These are called continental shelves. Other types live in very deep water. In Hawaii, some people call them monchong. The name pomfret may come from a Portuguese word. That word is pampo. It was used for many kinds of fish. There are also fossils of old fish. These old fish belong to the same family.
