Bonitos are a group of fish that live in the sea. They are medium in size. These fish are predators. This means they hunt other things for food.

Bonitos belong to a family called Scombridae. This family also includes tuna and mackerel. Some bonitos look a lot like skipjack tuna.

There are eight different species of bonito. These species belong to four groups called genera. Three of those groups have only one species each. People eat bonito in many ways. In the Atlantic and Mediterranean, people grill or bake them. Some people eat them pickled. In Japan, people make katsuobushi. These are dried bonito flakes. The meat of a bonito is dark. It also has a firm texture. Small bonito have lighter meat. This meat is often used for canning. It can also replace skipjack tuna in some foods.

The name bonito comes from Spanish and Portuguese words. In those languages, the word also means pretty.
