life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Rabbitfish are interesting fish with oval bodies.

They belong to a group called Siganidae. There are 29 different species in this group. Some live in big schools. Others like to live alone.

Most rabbitfish eat algae from the sea floor. Algae are tiny sea plants. Some species might also eat jellyfish or prawns. This makes them omnivorous, which means they eat both plants and animals.

Rabbitfish have special parts called spines on their fins. These spines have venom glands. If a spine stings you, it is very painful.

However, the sting is not usually a big danger to healthy adults.

These fish live in warm waters. They stay in places like reefs and seagrass beds. Some species moved from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean Sea. This happened through the Suez Canal. This move is called Lessepsian migration.

People also catch these fish for food. Some are even used in aquariums because they are colorful.
