Scombridae

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Scombridae is a big family of fish. This family includes mackerel, tuna, and bonito. These fish live in warm and cool ocean waters. They are found all over the world.

Most of these fish are fast hunters. They have smooth bodies to help them swim. They can also hide their fins in grooves on their bodies. This helps them move through the water with ease. Some fish, like tunas, are partially endothermic. This means they can stay warm inside their bodies. Being warm helps them stay active and swim fast. They also have a lot of red muscle. This helps them swim for a long time.

There are 51 types of these fish today. They belong to 15 different groups. One group is the butterfly kingfish. Most others belong to the Scombrinae subfamily.

Scientists study these fish carefully. A report from 2015 said something sad. The number of these fish fell by 74 percent. This happened between 1970 and 2010. It is important to know about these ocean animals.
