Most fish are cold. Their bodies match the water. The opah is different. It is an endotherm. This means it can keep its body warm. This helps it stay active in cold water. It uses its large fin muscles to make heat. It also has a thick layer of fat. This fat works like a blanket to keep heat in.

Opahs also keep their brains and eyes warm. They use a special set of blood vessels for this. We call this a rete mirabile. This is a web of tiny tubes. Warm blood moves past cold blood in these tubes. This way, the heat stays inside the fish.

These fish live in the open ocean. They eat small fish and squid. Large sharks are their main predators. Opahs swim by flapping their side fins. This helps them move at high speeds.
