In the spring, the tree makes catkins. These are long flower clusters. In the summer, it makes small seeds. These seeds have a white fluff. The wind helps carry the seeds away.

One special thing about this tree is how it grows. It can grow from its own roots. This makes large groups called clonal colonies. All trees in a colony are clones. This means they are all the same. They share one big root system.

One group is named Pando. It is very big and very old. Scientists think it started 8,000 to 12,000 years ago. Many animals like to eat the aspen. Deer, elk, and even bears eat its parts. The leaves also turn bright gold in the fall.
