Strobilus

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Many plants grow small parts called strobili. We often call these cones. A strobilus is a set of parts packed tightly around a stem. This stem is the central axis. The parts around it can be leaves or small stems. Some leaves hold spores. We call these parts sporophylls. Other parts are small stems that hold spores. These are called sporangiophores.

Plants use strobili in different ways. Some plants have pollen cones. These make pollen. Other plants have seed cones. These make ovules, which are parts that grow into seeds. In some plants, like cycads, one plant makes pollen and another makes seeds. This is called being dioecious.

Conifers are a big group of plants. They have pollen cones and seed cones. In many conifers, the seed cone is compound. This means it has many parts. A central stem has scales. The ovules grow on these scales. Strobili are a very neat way to grow. They pack many parts into a small space. This helps the plant spread its spores or seeds easily.
