Lycopodiaceae

Clubmosses are a very old family of plants. They began about 380 million years ago. Some people call them "wolf foot." This is because their roots or tips look like a wolf's paw.

These plants do not make seeds. Instead, they make spores. Spores are tiny bits of dust. These spores are oily and can burn easily. People once used them as a flash powder. Violin makers even used them to fill small holes in wood.

The spores grow on a part called a strobilus. This is a special tip that looks like a tiny club. This shape gives the plants their name. Most clubmosses grow between 5 and 20 cm tall.

Each plant has small leaves called microphylls. These leaves have just one vein. They often cover the stem in rows or scales. Many of these plants live in mountains. They grow in many places around the world. However, they do not like very dry places. Some people use running clubmosses for Christmas decor.
