Strobilus

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A strobilus is a special part of many land plants. It is a group of parts packed tightly around a stem. This central stem is called an axis. The parts around the axis can be leaves or small stems. Some of these parts are called sporophylls if they are leaves. Other parts are called sporangiophores if they are small stems. These structures help the plant reproduce. Many people call them cones.

Strobili work by holding sporangia, which are parts that hold spores. The parts can be arranged in a spiral pattern. They can also be arranged in a way called decussate. This means they sit in pairs across from each other. Some plants use these to make pollen. These are called microsporangiate strobili. Other plants use them to make ovules. These are called megasporangiate strobili. This way of growing is very compact. It helps the plant spread spores or seeds well.

Scientists believe these structures evolved on their own in many groups. This is called evolutionary convergence. It happens when different plants find the same good solution. A strobilus is a very tight way to pack parts. This shape helps with spreading spores. It also helps the plant use its nutrients well. The word strobilus comes from an Ancient Greek word. That word means something that turns or rolls into a round shape.

Many different plants use strobili in unique ways. Lycophytes are plants that use tiny leaves called microphylls. The plant Equisetum also makes strobili. In Equisetum, the parts are small stems called sporangiophores. Cycads are often dioecious. This means one plant makes pollen and another makes seeds. Ginkgo biloba makes pollen strobili. Its ovules are usually in pairs at the end of a stem. Conifers like pine trees have both pollen and seed cones.

Even flowering plants have versions of these structures. A flower can be seen as a bisexual strobilus. This means it has both parts in one place. The Magnolia flower is very special. Its parts are arranged in a spiral. Some plants have parts called catkins. These look like strobili but are more complex. You can see how nature uses these shapes everywhere. From tiny mosses to huge trees, the shape helps life continue.
