The yew is a special evergreen tree.

It stays green all year long. This tree grows in many places. You can find it in Europe and parts of Africa and Asia. Some yews grow in dark woods. Others grow on steep, rocky hills.

Yews have thin, reddish-brown bark. The leaves are flat and dark green. They grow in two rows on the stem. The tree also makes small red parts. We call these red parts arils. They are soft and very sweet. Birds love to eat them. The birds eat the sweet aril but not the hard seed. The seeds pass through the bird and land in new places. This helps new trees grow.

Most of the tree is very dangerous. It contains toxins called taxines.

These chemicals can hurt your heart. Even touching the plant or breathing its dust can be bad. Only the red aril is safe to eat.

People have used yew wood for a long time. It is very strong and springy. Long ago, people used it to make longbows. They also used it for musical instruments like lutes. Some yew trees are very old and grow in churchyards.
