Taxus brevifolia

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Pacific yew is a special evergreen conifer. It grows in the Pacific Northwest of North America. This tree can be a small shrub or a taller tree. It often grows in moist places like gullies or near streams. The tree is very slow-growing. Sometimes the inside of the trunk rots away. This makes the tree hollow inside. Because of this, it is hard to count the rings to find the age.

This tree has a very interesting way to make seeds. It does not have typical cones like other conifers. Instead, it makes a bright red structure called an aril. The aril is a soft, berry-like cup. It surrounds a single hard seed. This aril becomes ready about 6 to 9 months after pollination. The red color helps attract birds like thrushes. These birds eat the fleshy aril. They then spread the seeds in their droppings to help new trees grow.

Scientists have studied different types of this tree for many years. One variety is called the thicket yew. Its scientific name is Taxus brevifolia var. reptaneta. This variety often grows as a shrub in sunny spots. It has stems that creep along the ground before curving upward. Another rare variety is the worm cone yew. This variety is known as Taxus brevifolia var. polychaeta. It has a unique shape that looks a bit like a worm.

The Pacific yew lives in many places. It ranges from southern Alaska down to Northern California. You can also find it in British Columbia and Idaho. The tree can handle different amounts of light. It is shade tolerant, which means it grows well in the dark understory. This helps it grow along streams to provide shade. In the winter, animals like moose may feed on the tree in the Rocky Mountains.

People have used this tree for a long time. Native Americans used the strong wood for tools. They made things like bows, arrows, and canoe paddles. While the leaves and seeds are very poisonous, the tree is also useful for medicine. Scientists found a drug called paclitaxel inside the tree. This drug helps treat some types of cancer. In the 1990s, it became very important for medical use. Now, scientists can make it using other types of yew trees.
