Hemlocks are a special group of evergreen trees. They belong to the pine family, which is called Pinaceae.

People call them "hemlock" because of how their crushed leaves smell. This smell is similar to a different plant with the same name. However, these trees are not poisonous like that other plant. There are about eight to ten different species of hemlock in the world. Some live in North America and others live in eastern Asia.

These trees have a very specific way they grow. They are medium to large trees that stay green all year. Their bark is often scaly and can be grey or brown. The branches usually grow out sideways and then bend down at the tips.

The leaves are flat and grow in a spiral pattern around the stem. On the bottom of many leaves, you can see two white bands. These bands are actually tiny holes that help the tree breathe.

Scientists have studied these trees for a very long time. They found old fossils of hemlock twigs in Inner Mongolia, China. These twigs come from the Early Cretaceous period. They also found very old pollen in Poland from 90 million years ago. This was during the Upper Cretaceous period.

Long ago, hemlocks lived in Europe too. But they went extinct there about 780,000 to 440,000 years ago. This happened because the climate changed during the Quaternary glaciation.

Hemlocks like to live in cool and moist places. They do well in areas with high rainfall and cool summers. These trees are very strong against heavy winter snow. They can even handle ice storms better than most other trees.

They also like shade more than many other pine trees. However, they do not like it when the ground gets too dry. If there is a drought, the trees might struggle to survive.

People find many uses for these amazing trees. The wood is very important for making wood pulp for paper. The bark can even be used for tanning leather. Some people use the needles to make tea or perfume.

Sadly, some hemlocks in North America are in trouble. A tiny insect called the hemlock woolly adelgid attacks them. This insect sucks the sap from the trees. This is a hard job for the trees to face.
