Most hemlocks grow in cool and wet places. They can handle heavy snow and ice storms well. They also like shade more than other pine trees.

These trees have many different parts. Their bark is scaly and can be grey or brown. The branches often bend downward at the tips. The leaves are flat and grow in a spiral pattern.

Some leaves have white bands on the bottom. This helps the tree breathe.

Hemlocks make small cones. The seeds have tiny wings to help them fly. The seeds grow inside the cones for five to eight months.

People use hemlock in many ways. The wood is used to make paper pulp. The bark helps make leather. Some people even use the needles for tea or perfume. In North America, some hemlocks are in danger. A tiny insect called the hemlock woolly adelgid attacks them. This insect sucks the sap from the trees.
