Redcurrant

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The redcurrant is a small, leafy bush from western Europe. It belongs to a group of plants called Ribes. This plant is a deciduous shrub, which means it loses its leaves every year. It usually grows quite tall. The leaves have five parts and grow in a spiral pattern on the stems. Tiny yellow-green flowers grow on the plant in hanging groups. These flowers eventually turn into bright red, see-through berries.

These berries are very tasty and people eat them all over the world.

Growing these berries is a neat way to see how nature works. The plant can pollinate itself to make fruit. However, it makes even more fruit if another plant helps it. The berries grow in clusters called racemes. A wild plant might have between 3 and 10 berries on each cluster. An established bush can produce many berries from mid-to-late summer.

The berries have a tart or sour taste. This flavor comes from organic acids and special compounds called polyphenols. There are 65 different phenolic compounds in the fruit. These levels actually go up during the last month of ripening.

People have been growing these plants for a long time. Large berries were first made in Belgium and northern France during the 17th century. Today, many different types, or cultivars, have been chosen by growers. Some of these plants have even escaped from gardens into the wild. They can now be found across Europe and in parts of Asia.

Some special types have even won awards from the Royal Horticultural Society. These include names like 'Red Lake' and 'Stanza'. There is even a white version called 'White Grape'.

Redcurrants are full of useful things for our bodies. They are 84% water and 14% carbohydrates. They also have 1% protein and very little fat. A serving of these berries provides 46% of your daily vitamin C.

This vitamin is very important for health. People use the fruit in many different ways in their cooking. In the United Kingdom, people make a redcurrant jelly to eat with meat. In France, monks used to make a special jelly by hand. They even used a goose feather to remove the tiny pips.

Many cultures have their own special ways to enjoy these berries. In Germany, people mix redcurrant syrup with soda water. They call this drink Johannisbeerschorle. The name comes from St. John's Day on June 24. This is because the berries often ripen around that time.

In Austria, the berries are used to fill a cake called a Linzer torte. In Russia, they make a sweet dessert called kissel. You can even use the leaves to make a tea. It is amazing how one small bush can be used in so many ways.
