It grows on trees that have shiny, leathery leaves. These leaves are bluish-green in the summer. In the autumn, they change to bright yellow, orange, or red. The fruit itself can be many different shapes. Some look like round pumpkins. Others look like small acorns. The colors of the fruit range from light yellow-orange to dark red-orange.

People all over the world enjoy eating them as a seasonal treat.

There are two main ways these fruits taste. The first type is called astringent. This means the fruit tastes very bitter if you eat it too early.

To make them sweet, you must let them become very soft. You can help this happen by wrapping them in paper. You can also put them in a container with apples or bananas. These other fruits give off a gas called ethylene. This gas helps the persimmon ripen faster. Some people even use cold frost to help the fruit change.

The second type is called non-astringent. These fruits are often squat and shaped like a tomato.

A very common kind is called Fuyu. You can eat these while they are still firm and crunchy. There is even a special third type. These are called pollination-variant fruits. When they are fully pollinated, the inside flesh is dark brown. People call them "chocolate" or "cinnamon" persimmons because of their color. These special fruits are very hard to find and highly sought after.

Persimmons have a very long history.

The Oriental persimmon was first grown in China more than 2,000 years ago. It later moved to Japan in the 7th century. It arrived in Korea in the 14th century. In the 1800s, it was brought to California and southern Europe. Japanese immigrants brought the fruit to Brazil in the 1890s. Today, China is a huge producer of this fruit. In 2023, China grew 80% of the world's persimmons.

You might know other fruits that grow in the fall too. Just like apples, persimmons are a popular autumn snack. Some persimmon trees are even used to make things like baked goods. In the eastern United States, people use the American persimmon for puddings. They even use them to make a drink called persimmon beer. Whether they are bright orange or dark brown inside, these fruits are a wonderful part of nature. They show how many different ways a single kind of fruit can grow and taste.
