Hazelnuts are tasty nuts that come from trees in the Corylus group.

People love them for many different reasons. They make a great snack when eaten raw or roasted. You can also find them in breakfast cereals like muesli. Many people enjoy them in sweet treats like chocolate truffles or chocolate bars. Some even use hazelnut oil for salad dressings or cooking.

In Italy, people mix ground hazelnuts with chocolate to make pralines. This idea even helped create Nutella, which is a popular cocoa spread.

Growing these nuts involves many careful steps. A hazelnut starts inside a soft, fibrous husk. When the nut is ripe, it falls out of that husk. The nut itself has a smooth shell and an edible seed inside.

Some farmers use a method called brutting to help the tree. They snap the tips of new shoots to help the tree make more flowers. In the autumn, the nuts fall to the ground. Farmers often wait for this to happen naturally instead of shaking the trees.

People have been enjoying hazelnuts for a very long time. About 8,000 years ago, people in Scotland were already processing them. Scientists found a large pit on the island of Colonsay filled with burned shells.

This discovery shows that ancient communities likely planned together to harvest them. It also suggests these people might have had a mostly vegetarian diet. In the United Kingdom, some people call these nuts cobnuts. This name comes from an old word for a head. Children used to play a game hitting each other's heads with nuts on strings.

Today, many countries work hard to grow hazelnuts for the whole world. In 2023, Turkey was the largest producer of all. They produced 57.7% of the world's total hazelnut supply.

Italy and the United States are also big producers. In the United States, most hazelnuts grow in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. To collect the nuts, farmers use special machines. A sweeper moves the nuts into rows in the middle of the orchard.

Then, a harvester picks them up and separates them from leaves and twigs.

Hazelnuts are part of many different cultures and stories. They appear in famous poems and plays by writers like William Shakespeare. In his play Romeo and Juliet, a shell is used as a tiny chariot. They are also important in many types of cooking around the world. For example, people in Austria use hazelnut paste to make delicious tortes. In France, a cake called Dacquoise uses hazelnut meringue. Whether they are in a snack or a fancy dessert, hazelnuts are a special part of our food world.
