Hazelnut

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Hazelnuts are small nuts that grow on trees.

They come from trees in a group called Corylus. Some people call them cobnuts or filberts. A hazelnut has a smooth shell. A soft husk covers the shell while it grows. The nut falls out of the husk when it is ripe.

The seed inside is the part we eat. You can eat it raw or roasted. People also grind it into a paste.

People use hazelnuts in many tasty ways. They are in breakfast cereals like muesli. They are used to make chocolate treats. You might find them in chocolate bars or Nutella. In Italy, people mix them with chocolate to make pralines.

Farmers work hard to grow these nuts. In Turkey, many hazelnuts are grown. Turkey made the most hazelnuts in 2023. In the United States, most grow in Oregon. During harvest, many nuts fall to the ground. Farmers use machines to collect them. One machine is called a sweeper. It moves nuts into rows so they can be picked up.
