These trees can live for 1,000 years. They grow very tall and straight. Their branches reach high above other trees.

To make fruit, the tree needs help. Large bees visit the small flowers. These bees are the only ones that can pollinate the trees.

After pollination, a large fruit grows. It takes 14 months to mature. The fruit is a heavy, woody capsule. It can weigh as much as a coconut. Inside, many seeds are packed together. They look like the segments of an orange.

Animals like the agouti help the forest grow. The agouti gnaws the shell to eat seeds. It hides other seeds in the ground. These seeds can grow into new trees.

People harvest these nuts in the wild. In 2023, Brazil and Bolivia made 91% of the world's supply. The nuts are full of selenium. This is a tiny part of food that helps our bodies.

However, do not eat too many. Too much selenium can be bad for you. People also use the oil for soap and paint.
