It is one of the largest and longest-lived trees in the forest. These trees can live for 500 years or even more. Some may even reach a thousand years of age. The trunk is very straight and grows tall without many branches. Most of the branches are high up in a large crown. This crown sits above the canopy of other trees.

There is a special way these trees make new seeds. First, large bees must visit the small, greenish-white flowers. Only certain large bees, like those in the genus Bombus or Xylocopa, can pollinate the flowers. This usually happens in pristine forests. After pollination, a large fruit grows for 14 months. The fruit is a heavy, woody capsule. It can weigh as much as a coconut. Inside, many wedge-shaped seeds are packed together like orange segments.

Nature helps the seeds find a place to grow. The fruit has a small hole at one end. Large rodents called agoutis use this hole to gnaw the shell open. They eat some seeds and bury others for later. These buried seeds can grow into new trees. This is how the forest stays full of Brazil nut trees. Capuchin monkeys have even been seen using stones to open the nuts.

People harvest these nuts from the wild in South America. In 2023, the world produced 75,910 tonnes of Brazil nuts. Brazil and Bolivia produced 91% of that total amount. Workers who gather the nuts are called castanheiros or castañeros. Most of the nuts come from wild harvests in tropical forests. This way of working helps people earn money without destroying the forest. However, logging is still a big threat to these trees.

Brazil nuts are very important for nutrition. They are a rich source of many things like magnesium and zinc. They are especially known for having a high amount of selenium. Selenium is a tiny part of food that is very important for our bodies. However, eating too much selenium can be toxic. A single serving of six to eight nuts has 544 micrograms of selenium. It is often best to eat only a few nuts at a time.
