It can be a liquid, a solid, or even a thick paste. People love it in many forms like ice cream, cakes, and cookies. You might even find it as a snack in a chocolate bar. It is a special treat used for gifts during many holidays. People share chocolate shapes like hearts or eggs for Valentine's Day and Easter.

It is also enjoyed in warm drinks like hot chocolate.

Making chocolate is a long process that starts with a tree. The cacao tree is a small evergreen that grows near the equator.

It produces large fruit called cocoa pods. Inside these pods are the seeds, which we call cocoa beans. First, the beans are fermented in piles to develop their flavor. Then, they are dried in the sun and roasted.

After roasting, the shells are removed to find the nibs. These nibs are ground into a smooth liquid called chocolate liquor.

There are many different ways to finish making chocolate. You can make dark chocolate by adding sugar to the cocoa.

If you add milk, you create milk chocolate. White chocolate is unique because it uses cocoa butter and milk without cocoa solids. To make chocolate feel very smooth, makers use a machine called a conche.

This machine uses metal beads to grind the particles very small. This makes the chocolate feel silky on your tongue instead of gritty.

Chocolate has a very long and interesting history. The cacao tree was used as food in Ecuador at least 5,300 years ago.

In Mesoamerica, the Mayans and Aztecs thought cacao was a gift from the gods. They did not eat solid bars like we do today. Instead, they drank a bitter beverage that had a dark brown foam on top. They even used cocoa beans as a type of money! In the 16th century, chocolate was introduced to Europe by Spanish explorers.

Today, the way we make and eat chocolate has changed a lot. In the 1800s, new machines helped people make chocolate in huge amounts. This changed chocolate from a fancy drink for the elite into a food for everyone. Most of the world's cocoa beans now come from West African countries.

Specifically, Ivory Coast and Ghana provide about 60% of the supply. We must remember that making these beans can sometimes involve hard work and unfair conditions for workers. Knowing this helps us understand the whole story of our favorite treat.
