An apricot is a small, tasty fruit. It grows on a small tree with a round canopy. The fruit is a succulent drupe, which is a type of stonefruit. This means it has a single seed inside a hard shell. The fruit is often orange-yellow with a little red color. The tree produces white or pinkish flowers in early spring. These flowers appear even before the leaves grow on the branches.

Growing these trees requires specific steps and careful timing. The trees need a certain amount of chilling to grow well. They prefer dry climates to help the fruit mature. Farmers often graft apricot branches onto different rootstocks. The scion is the part that provides the flavor and size. The rootstock is the part that helps the plant grow. Spring frosts can be a hard job for these trees. If it is too cold, the frost can kill the early flowers.

People have been growing apricots for a very long time. Scientists used to think they came from Armenia. This is why the scientific name includes the word armeniaca. However, genetic studies show a different story. Experts believe they were first grown in Central Asia and China. From there, the trees spread to places like Japan and North Africa. They also moved into Europe and West Asia. This long journey helped apricots become popular all over the world.

Today, apricot production is quite large. In 2023, the world produced 3.7 million tonnes of the fruit. Turkey is the leader in this industry. They produce 20% of the total amount. Other major producers include Uzbekistan, Iran, Italy, and Algeria. The city of Malatya is a very important center for Turkey's apricot industry.
