Growing an almond is a step-by-step process. First, the tree needs a Mediterranean climate. This means it likes warm, dry summers. It also needs mild, wet winters.

In early spring, the tree grows fragrant flowers. These flowers are white or pale pink. They appear before the leaves grow. The flowers must be pollinated to make fruit. Most almond trees are self-incompatible. This means they need pollen from a different tree. Insects like bees carry this pollen between flowers.

After flowering, the fruit grows for seven or eight months. In the autumn, the hull splits open. Then, the fruit falls from the tree.

Humans have grown almonds for a very long time. They were one of the earliest fruit trees to be domesticated. This happened because they can grow from seeds. People found evidence of them in the Early Bronze Age. These sites are in the Middle East.

Almonds were even found in the tomb of Tutankhamun in Egypt. Long ago, people spread them along the Mediterranean Sea. They moved them to northern Africa and southern Europe. Today, they are grown in many different parts of the world.

There are many interesting facts about where almonds come from. California is a huge producer of almonds. It makes about 80% of the world's supply.

However, growing them there can be a hard job. California faces droughts and heat from climate change. This makes it difficult to grow enough. In February, California has a massive event. Over one million beehives are brought to the orchards. This is the largest managed pollination event on Earth.

Almost half of all honeybees in the U.S. help these trees. This helps ensure there are enough seeds to eat.

Some almonds are blanched. This means they were put in hot water. The water softens the skin so it can be removed. This shows the white embryo inside. You can keep clean almonds in a fridge for a year. If you leave them in a warm place, they become rancid. This means they will taste bad very quickly.
