Almond milk

language culture Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Almond milk is a plant-based drink made from almonds.

It has a thin, watery texture and a nutty flavor. Many people enjoy it because it has no cholesterol or lactose. It is also low in saturated fat. People who are lactose-intolerant often choose it as a substitute for cow's milk. Vegans also drink it because they do not eat dairy.

Making almond milk is a simple process. You can make it at home using a blender. First, you soak and grind almonds in plenty of water. After that, you filter out the almond pulp, which is the soft flesh. This leaves you with a milky white liquid. You can also make it by adding water to almond butter.

People have used almond milk for a very long time. In the Middle Ages, it was used during Catholic fasting times. Some recipes from the 13th century in the Middle East mention it. A book called Kitāb al-Ṭabīḫ was written in 1226. It included recipes for almond milk. In those days, it was an expensive substitute for cow's milk.

Almond milk has become very popular in recent years. In the United States, sales grew by 79 percent in 2011. By 2013, it was more popular than soy milk in the U.S. In 2014, it made up 60 percent of all plant-milk sales there. The global market for it was worth 5.8 billion dollars in 2018. It might reach 13 billion dollars by 2025.

Most of the almonds come from places like California. The Central Valley has the sun and soil they need. However, growing almonds uses a lot of water. This can be a hard job during droughts. Farmers use new ways to help the trees and the soil. They also use solar energy to help the process.
