In early spring, the trees grow white or pink flowers.

These flowers bloom before the leaves appear. Many almond trees need help to make fruit. They need pollen from different trees. Insects like bees carry this pollen.

The fruit is not a true nut. It is a drupe. A drupe is a fruit with a hard shell. The fruit has a thick, leathery skin called a hull. Inside the hull is the hard shell. The seed is inside that shell. Most people eat the sweet seed. Some seeds are bitter. To make blanched almonds, people use hot water. This softens the skin so it can be removed. This reveals the white part inside. You can store clean almonds in a fridge for a year. If they are too warm, they go bad quickly.
