Peach trees belong to the rose family. They are related to cherries, plums, and almonds.

Peaches are known as stone fruits. This is because they have a hard pit inside. Scientists also call these fruits drupes.

The fruit can be round or shaped like a doughnut. The skin is often fuzzy. However, some peaches have smooth skin. We call these smooth fruits nectarines.

Nectarines are actually the same kind of fruit as peaches. A small change in the fruit's genes makes the skin smooth instead of fuzzy.

Most peaches come from China. In 2023, China made 65% of the world's peaches and nectarines. The peach tree is a symbol of long life in China. These trees usually live for about twenty years.
