People often call them sword lilies because of their unique shape. This name comes from their long, narrow leaves. These plants are found in many parts of the world. They grow in Asia and Mediterranean Europe. You can also find them in South Africa and tropical Africa. They are very important plants in many different lands.

These plants grow from round parts called corms.

A corm is a thick underground stem that stores energy. Each corm is wrapped in several layers of brown, fibrous material. The plant sends up a stem that usually does not branch. It grows one to nine leaves that look like swords. These leaves have tiny grooves and a waxy coating. This coating helps the leaves shed raindrops in one direction.

History shows how these flowers became so famous. Carl Linnaeus first described the genus in 1753. He used the name that was originally given by Joseph Pitton de Tournefort. Over many years, people have changed the flowers through hybridization. This means they bred different types together to get new traits. Because of this work, we now have giant flower spikes. These large flowers are often sold in stores today.

There are many different types of Gladiolus to learn about.

There are about 260 species found in southern Africa. About 76 species live in tropical Africa. You can also find about 10 species in Eurasia. Some plants have flowers that are very small. Other types have huge spikes with many colorful flowers. The colors can be pink, red, purple, white, or even orange.

Understanding a flower helps us see how nature works. The flowers have parts called tepals. This term is used because the petals and sepals look almost the same. These tepals join together at the bottom to form a tube. Inside the flower, you will find stamens and a style. The plant also makes seeds that have little wings. These wings help the seeds move away from the parent plant.
