Irises grow in a few different ways depending on where they live. Some species are perennial plants that grow from creeping rhizomes. A rhizome is a thick part of the plant that stays near the soil.

Other species live in drier places and grow from bulbs. Rhizomatous irises usually have three to ten sword-shaped leaves. Bulbous species have two to ten narrow leaves. The flowers often grow in a fan shape. They have six lobes that look very symmetrical.

Each iris flower has very specific parts that work together. Three petals hang downward and are called falls. These falls can have dots, lines, or veins on them. Some irises have a beard of fuzzy hairs on these petals.

This beard helps insects land and find nectar. Three other petals stand upright and are called standards. The flowers also have an ovary located below the other parts. This makes them what scientists call epigynous flowers.

Insects play a huge role in how the iris works. The shape of the flower creates a landing stage for flying bugs. When an insect looks for nectar, it touches the pollen surfaces.

As the insect moves, it carries pollen to the next flower. This helps the plant make new seeds. The fruit of the iris is a capsule. This capsule eventually opens up to show many seeds inside.

People have studied and grown irises for a very long time. In 1936, Ronald Fisher used iris data for his scientific work. Today, there are many famous iris gardens in the world. The Giardino dell'Iris in Italy is a very famous one. In the United States, the American Iris Society tracks many names. They recognize over 30,000 different registered names for these plants.
