The plant uses a clever trick to ensure successful breeding. A shelf-like projection sits beneath the style arm. As an insect enters, it hits the stigma first. When the insect backs out, it hits the pollen-covered surface. This ensures that pollen from a previous flower is deposited on the stigma, but the insect's own pollen is not rubbed off on the same flower.

Taxonomy, or the science of naming and grouping plants, is quite detailed for the iris. The genus is the largest in the family Iridaceae. Modern classifications have subdivided the genus into several subgenera. For example, the subgenus Limniris includes beardless rhizomatous irises. Other subgenera include Xiphium, which contains smooth-bulbed bulbous irises, and Scorpiris, known as junos.

Some scientists have argued about whether certain groups should be separate genera. For instance, some authors moved the subgenus Xiphium into its own genus, Xiphion. However, many later writers have not accepted these changes. The classification often depends on features like whether the seeds have an aril, which is a fleshy covering.

Irises are found across much of the temperate Northern Hemisphere. They grow in places ranging from Europe and Asia to North America. While they can live in many habitats, they often prefer dry, semi-desert, or rocky mountain areas. Some species, like Iris setosa, can handle wet bogs. Others, like Iris foetidissima, live in woodlands or scrub areas.

Because they are so beautiful, they are grown extensively in gardens. The American Iris Society recognizes over 30,000 registered cultivar names. In the United Kingdom, the British Iris Society helps promote them. Some irises, like Iris reichenbachii, can bloom as early as February or March.

Cultivation of irises has led to incredible variety. Many modern bearded irises are hybrids, which are plants created by crossing different species. Gardeners often classify them simply as bulb irises or rhizome irises. The famous "German iris" is actually a sterile hybrid.
