Snowdrops are beautiful, small plants that grow from bulbs.

They belong to a group called Galanthus. This name comes from two Greek words meaning "milk" and "flower." These plants are special because they often bloom in the winter. Many species flower before the spring equinox on March 20 or 21. Some even bloom in late autumn or early spring.

Each plant has a very specific way it grows. Most snowdrops have two long, thin leaves. These leaves come from a bulb underground. The leaves can emerge in different ways. Some are pressed flat against each other. Others are folded or even rolled up tightly.

A single flower grows on a tall, straight stalk. The flower looks like a white bell hanging down. It has six parts called tepals. These tepals sit in two circles. The outer circle is larger than the inner one. The smaller inner parts often have green markings.

People have known about snowdrops for a very long time. A Greek writer named Theophrastus wrote about them in the fourth century BCE. He called them "white violets." Later, botanists like Rembert Dodoens and John Gerard described them in the 1500s. In 1753, Carl Linnaeus gave the group its official name, Galanthus. He is the person credited with naming the species Galanthus nivalis.

Snowdrops live in many different places around the world. They are native to Europe and the Middle East. You can find them from the Pyrenees mountains to Iran. They grow in many spots, like woodlands or mountains.

Some species, like Galanthus nivalis, have traveled far from home. They are now found in North America and other regions. In Russia, they can even be found above the 56th parallel. Scientists are still finding new types today. For example, they found Galanthus trojanus in Turkey in 2001.

Nature has a clever way of helping these plants spread. After the flower fades, it turns into a small fruit. This fruit is shaped like a ball or an oval. Inside the fruit are small, oblong seeds. These seeds have a tiny tail called an elaiosome. This tail contains things that ants find very tasty.

Because ants like the tail, they carry the seeds to new places. This helps the snowdrops grow in new areas. It is a wonderful partnership between plants and insects.
