This plant has a very specific look. It has narrow, shiny green leaves. These leaves have slightly jagged edges. The stems are a pretty purple color. Like other plants in the mint family, the stems are square. The leaves grow in pairs on opposite sides.

The flowers grow in a shape called a thyrse. These flowers are purple. When they open up, they look pink. The plant is sturdy and grows in a compact way.

Scientists use names to group these plants. Thai basil is a variety of sweet basil. Its scientific name is Ocimum basilicum var. thyrsiflora. The name for the whole group, Ocimum, comes from a Greek word. That word means "to smell." This is a good name because many of these plants have strong scents. There are over 40 different types of basil. This can make it hard to tell them apart. Some people call it anise basil or licorice basil.

Many people use Thai basil in delicious meals. It is a main part of Thai green and red curries. In Vietnam, people eat raw leaves with dishes like phở. These leaves help people season their food to their own taste. In Taiwan, the plant is called the "nine-storey pagoda." It is also used in a dish called sanbeiji. This is a popular Taiwanese three-cup chicken dish. In Western kitchens, it is the most common basil for Asian cooking.

Growing Thai basil is a fun way to garden. It is a tropical plant that loves the heat. It needs a place with no frost. It also needs 6 to 8 hours of full sunlight every day. You can grow it from seeds or from cuttings. The soil should be fertile and drain water well. You should pinch off the flowers as they grow. This stops the leaves from tasting bitter. If you pick leaves often, the plant will grow back.
