Hibiscus tea is a bright, ruby-red drink that people enjoy all over the world.

It is made from the calyces of the roselle flower. These calyces are the deep magenta or crimson parts at the base of the flower. The drink has a tart, strong flavor that is a lot like cranberry juice. People can serve it hot as a tea or cold as a juice. Because it is often sweetened and chilled, many people call it a juice.

Making this drink involves a few simple steps. To make it, people steep the dried calyces in boiling water. After the flowers soak, they strain the mixture to remove the solids. In Mexico, people often press the calyces to squeeze out every bit of juice. Then, they add sugar and stir it well.

Some people also add extra flavors like mint, ginger, or even pineapple juice. In Panama, they boil the flowers with spices like nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, and ginger.

The roselle plant likely comes from Africa, especially from the land of Sudan.

In West Africa, the drink has many different names. In Senegal, it is called bissap and is known as the national drink. In Nigeria, people call it zobo, and in Ghana, it is called sobolo. In Egypt and Sudan, the drink is called karkadé. It is very popular in markets and open-air cafés. In Egypt and Sudan, people even use it to toast during wedding celebrations.

This drink is found in many different places with unique traditions. In Mexico, it is called agua de Jamaica and is a common "agua fresca." This is a type of inexpensive drink made from fresh juices. In the Caribbean, it is called sorrel and is a special part of Christmas. People in Jamaica might serve it with fruitcake or sweet potato pudding.

In Thailand, people call it grajeab and often find it in plastic bags filled with ice. It is even used to make wine or mixed with Chinese tea leaves.

Many people value hibiscus tea for more than just its tasty flavor. In Sudan, people have used karkadé in folk medicine for many health conditions. Researchers found that the flowers contain chemicals called anthocyanins. These chemicals might help the body fight certain things like inflammation. Some studies also show the tea might help lower blood pressure in adults. Even though it is a simple drink, it plays a big role in many cultures.
