A wildfire is a large, unplanned, and uncontrolled fire. It moves through areas filled with plants that can burn easily.

While these fires can be dangerous, some natural ecosystems actually depend on them. Many plant species need the effects of fire to grow and make new seeds. Modern forest management even uses prescribed burns to help these natural cycles. These are controlled fires meant to reduce risk, but they can sometimes turn into wildfires by mistake.

To start, a fire needs three things: an ignition source, fuel, and oxygen.

The fuel is the plant material, like leaves or wood. When a fire front approaches, it heats the air and the wood nearby. First, the heat turns the water in the wood into steam. Next, a process called pyrolysis happens, which turns the wood into flammable gases. Finally, the wood can smolder or ignite into flames.

Wildfires can start in different ways. Natural causes include lightning, volcanic eruptions, or even sparks from falling rocks.

Human activities also cause many fires. About 85% of wildfires come from human actions like using power lines, campfires, or tools like chainsaws. In some places, like the tropics, farmers use slash-and-burn methods to clear fields. Even coal seam fires can flare up and start nearby fires.

Fires move through the land in different layers. Ground fires smolder underground in roots or organic matter. Surface fires burn low-lying things like grass and shrubs.

Ladder fires use small trees or vines to climb upward. This can lead to crown fires, which burn the tops of tall trees.

Large fires can also spread by spotting. This is when wind carries hot embers, called firebrands, through the air to start new fires far away.

Weather and climate play a huge role in how fires behave. Dry weather and heat make plants very flammable.

Large wildfires can even change the weather by creating powerful updrafts of hot air. This can lead to pyrocumulus clouds or fire whirls that spin like tornadoes.
