These fires start in different ways. Nature can start them with lightning or volcanoes. People can also start them. Most human-caused fires come from things like power lines or tools.

Wildfires move through different parts of the land. Ground fires burn things under the soil, like roots. Surface fires burn low plants and grass. Ladder fires use small trees to reach higher up. Finally, crown fires burn the tops of tall trees.

Weather and fuel change how a fire acts. Dry weather makes plants easy to burn. If plants lack water, they catch fire faster. Wind can also help a fire spread. It carries firebrands, which are hot pieces of wood, through the air. These can land far away and start new fires. This is called spotting.
