A disturbance is a change in the environment. It can change how an ecosystem looks and works.

Disturbances come in many forms. Some are natural, like fires, floods, or storms. An earthquake or a disease can also be a disturbance. Some happen because of people. Activities like mining or farming can change the land.

These changes can be small, like one tree falling. They can also be huge, like a mass extinction. After a disturbance, new life often grows quickly. This is because there is more space and sunlight. For example, fire can return nutrients to the soil.

Some plants are called pioneer species. These are plants that grow fast in new spaces. They are good at living in disturbed areas. Over time, the forest may change again. This set of steps is called ecological succession.
