Every living thing has a special role in nature. This role is called an ecological niche. A niche is how a species fits into its home. It shows how a living thing uses food and space.

Scientists look at niches in a few ways. One way is the Grinnellian niche. This focuses on what a species needs to live. It looks at things like temperature and sun. It also looks at how an animal acts to stay safe.

Another way is the Eltonian niche. This looks at how a species acts in a food chain. It shows how animals use food and deal with enemies. Some animals even change their home. A beaver builds a dam in a river. This change affects other animals nearby.

There is also the Hutchinsonian niche. This uses math to study many needs at once. It looks at many factors like light and nutrients. This helps us see how many species can live together.

Sometimes, species compete for the same things. This can make their niche smaller. This smaller space is called a realized niche.
