A drought is a period of much drier conditions than normal.

It happens when there is a lack of moisture for a long time. This shortage can last for days, months, or even many years. Droughts are very complex and hard to monitor.

They can affect many different parts of our world. Because they change how much water is available, they impact almost everything living. This includes people, animals, and the plants that grow in the soil.

There are three main ways to group these dry periods. First is meteorological drought, which is a lack of precipitation like rain or snow.

Second is hydrological drought, which happens when water in lakes, rivers, and underground storage falls too low. This type often moves more slowly because it uses stored water. Third is agricultural or ecological drought. This happens when plants feel stress because the soil is dry and water is evaporating.

Heat waves can make these conditions much worse by increasing evapotranspiration. This is when water moves from the ground and plants into the air.

Scientists have studied these patterns for a long time. Dendrochronological studies, which look at tree rings, date these changes back to 1900.

People have always viewed droughts as disasters because they affect food. Some people once thought droughts were caused by supernatural forces. Others saw them as natural disasters or caused by human activity. By the early 1980s, there were over 150 different ways to define a drought. This shows how many different ways experts try to understand the problem.

Many places around the world face high risks from these dry spells. The Amazon basin, Australia, the Sahel region, and India are all at risk.

In 2005, parts of the Amazon had the worst drought in 100 years. Australia had a very long period called the Millennial drought that ended in 2010.

More recently, the 2020–2022 drought in the Horn of Africa was very severe. It was even longer and more serious than the drought in 2010–2011. These numbers help us see how much the weather can change.

Droughts link to many things you see in the news or nature. They can cause big wildfires because dry plants act like fuel.

They also cause dust in the air and can make it hard to travel on rivers. When crops fail, food becomes expensive and people may have to move to find water. This can lead to a humanitarian crisis. Understanding these cycles helps us manage our water better. This is important for keeping our farms, forests, and cities healthy and safe.
