A polder is a special type of low-lying land.

It is an artificial area made by humans to control water. To make a polder, people build strong walls called dikes. These dikes surround the land to keep water out. There are three main ways to make them. Some people reclaim land from a lake or the sea. Others use dikes to separate flood plains from rivers. Some people turn marshes into polders by draining the water.

Keeping a polder dry is a big job. Water constantly tries to enter the land. It comes from rain or from groundwater soaking in. Sometimes water travels through rivers or canals. This means polders often have too much water. People must pump the water out to keep the land usable. They might use sluices to let water out at low tide.

If the water level is too low, it can cause problems. For example, peat land can sink when it touches air.

Humans have been building these areas for a long time. The first embankments in Europe were built during Roman times. The very first polders were made in the 11th century. One of the oldest polders still around is the Achtermeer polder. It was made in the year 1533. In the Netherlands, people formed special groups called water boards. These groups manage the dikes and the water levels. They are some of the oldest democratic groups in the country.

Many countries use polders for farming and living. The Netherlands is very famous for them. About 20% of its land was once reclaimed from the sea. The Flevopolder is even the largest artificial island in the world.

Other places like China, Canada, and Bangladesh also have polders. In Bangladesh, there are 139 polders to protect the coast.

Some polders even have wind farms on them now.

Sometimes, polders have been used in history for defense. During World War I, soldiers flooded polders along the Yser River. They opened the sluices to turn the land into a swamp. This helped the Allied armies stop the German army. Today, engineers work hard to keep polders safe from floods. They use math to decide how strong a dike needs to be. This helps protect homes and farms from the water.
