A polder is a low piece of land.

People build walls called dikes to keep water out. These walls can be made of sand or peat.

Sometimes, people make polders from the sea. Other times, they make them from marshes. This creates new dry land for people to use.

Water can still get in from rain. People must pump the water out to keep it dry. If they do not, the land might flood.

Many polders are in the Netherlands. Some are even below the sea!

This helps people have more space to live.
