A polder is a low piece of land.

People use walls called dikes to keep water out. These dikes surround the land. There are three main types of polders. Some are made from lakes or the sea. Others come from flood plains. Some are made from marshes.

Because polders are so low, water can get in. Rain or groundwater can soak into the land. This makes the ground very wet. People must pump the water out. They often use sluices or pumps.

Many polders are in the Netherlands. In fact, 20% of that country was reclaimed from the sea. The Flevopolder is the largest artificial island in the world.

Other countries have polders too. You can find them in China, Canada, and Bangladesh. In the past, polders were even used in wars. Soldiers flooded polders to stop enemy armies. This turned the land into a swamp.
