The system uses three main lines to move people. Line A is orange and has 27 stations. It runs from the suburbs to the north near Vatican City. Line B is blue and connects the northeast to the southwest. It has 26 stations and was the very first line.

Line C is green and is the newest line. It is the first line to go outside the city limits. The trains on Line C are driverless. This means they use special technology to move without a driver.

Building the Metro has been a long journey. Line B was planned in the 1930s. It was meant to connect to a big fair in 1942. However, the Second World War stopped the fair from happening. Workers finished some tunnels before the war started. During the war, people used these tunnels as air raid shelters.

Construction finally finished and the first line opened in 1955. The President of the Republic, Luigi Einaudi, opened it.

Digging in Rome is a very hard job. This is because Rome is an ancient city. When workers dig for tunnels, they often find old things. They find gold jewelry, coins, and old columns.

These finds often stop the work for a while. At the San Giovanni station, they built an archeostation. This station lets people see history while they wait for a train. You can see items from the prehistoric age at the platform level. You can also see a huge ancient pool there.

The Metro is part of a much larger web. It works with buses, trams, and other trains. People use a single ticket called Metrebus to travel. This ticket works for the Metro and many other ways to move.

The trains are quite large too. Each train is about 105 meters long. They have six cars to hold many passengers. This huge system keeps the ancient city moving every single day.
