The Santiago Metro is a huge rapid transit system.

It serves Santiago, the capital of Chile. This system is the first of its kind in the country. Today, it has seven lines and 143 stations.

About 2.5 million passengers use the metro every single day. This is a massive amount of people. On May 2, 2019, the system hit a record peak. That day, 2,951,962 people rode the trains. It is the second largest metro system in Latin America. It is also the sixth largest in the Americas.

Building a metro is a huge task that happens in steps. First, leaders must plan where the tracks will go.

Next, workers dig tunnels deep under the ground. Sometimes, the tracks stay above ground on a viaduct.

This means the train travels on a bridge-like structure. The system also uses exchange stations to help people. These stations let riders switch between trains and buses easily. New lines like Line 7 will add 19 more stations. This new path will connect Renca to Vitacura. It will cost about US$2.53 billion to finish.

People first thought about an underground railway in 1944. The city was growing very fast back then.

In the 1960s, Juan Parrochia began making a master plan. The government then looked for companies to help build it. On October 24, 1968, the government approved a new draft. This plan suggested building five different lines. Work on the very first line finally began in 1969.

This line linked the Civil District to Barrancas. The first line officially opened on September 15, 1975. It ran mostly underground under the Alameda.

History shows that many things can change a plan. An economic crisis in 1982 halted some original ideas.

Then, a large earthquake struck in March 1985. This earthquake used money meant for building the metro. The money went to rebuilding the city instead. Because of this, only two new stations opened in 1986. These were Santa Ana and Puente Cal y Canto. Workers found old bridge remains during the digging process. This is how the station got its name. Later, the metro became a state-owned company called Metro S.A.

Today, the metro is a key part of daily life.

It helps people reach different parts of the city quickly. For example, Line 4 serves many large areas. It reaches places like Providencia and Puente Alto. Some lines, like Line 6, use new technology. Line 6 has automatic machines for buying tickets. This makes things easier for the riders. The metro connects to the Transantiago bus system too. This helps the whole city move together every day.
