About 2.5 million people ride these trains every day. This is a very large number of people.

People first thought about an underground railway in 1944. They wanted to help the city as it grew. Work on the first line began in 1969. Line 1 opened in 1975.

The system grew even when things were hard. An economic crisis in 1982 stopped some plans. An earthquake in 1985 also used money meant for the trains.

Many new lines were built later. Line 4 was once the longest line in the network.

Line 6 opened in 2017. It uses automatic machines for tickets. A new line, Line 7, is being built now. It will have 19 new stations. It should open in 2027 to help more people travel.
