This place is part of an overseas region of France. It sits in the Lesser Antilles. The city is located on the southwest part of Grande-Terre island. It faces the warm Caribbean Sea. It is also near the Rivière Salée, which is the Salt River. This river separates Grande-Terre from the island of Basse-Terre. The city sits on a limestone plateau. This flat, rocky ground helped people build the town. A bay called Petit Cul-de-Sac Marin is nearby. This bay provides a sheltered port for boats.

The city is a major center for business and trade. It is known as the economic capital of Guadeloupe. Many ships come to the area to carry goods. The main seaport is the Port de Jarry. It is located in the nearby town of Baie-Mahault. This port has a very long quay that is 600 meters long. People in this region grow and sell many things. They export food like bananas, cocoa, coffee, and sugar. They also sell animal products like beef, milk, and yogurt. Other goods like textiles and medicines are sent away from here too.

The history of the city is quite long and full of changes.

People tried to build a city here a long time ago. They tried between 1713 and 1730, but the ground was too swampy. Later, a settlement appeared on a hill during the British occupation. After the French returned in 1763, the city was officially founded in 1764. A leader named Gabriel de Clieu helped start it. Workers had to drain the swamps so the city could grow. The city grew quickly, but it faced many hard times. Great fires and earthquakes hit the town many times. Hurricanes also caused damage in years like 1865 and 1928.

Today, many people live in and around the city. In 2018, about 15,410 people lived in the city itself. However, the larger urban area is much bigger. This area includes eleven different towns. It had 250,952 people in 2018. This makes it the largest urban area in Guadeloupe. The city is part of the Les Abymes metropolitan area. The most populated town nearby is Les Abymes. The current mayor of the city is Harry Durimel. The weather stays hot throughout the year. Temperatures often stay around 32 °C during the day.
