Maceió is a large coastal city in Brazil. It is the capital of the state of Alagoas. The city sits between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mundaú Lagoon. Its name comes from a Tupi Indigenous word. Some say it means a spring. Others say it means "that which covers the swamp."

This name fits the land well. Many lakes and springs exist in this part of Brazil. This is also why the state is named Alagoas.

The weather in Maceió is very warm and wet. It has a tropical monsoon climate. This means there is high humidity all year long. You might feel very hot during the day. However, trade winds from the ocean help cool things down. January is the warmest month of the year. July is the coolest month and brings much more rain.

History shows how the city grew over many years. It began near an old sugar mill and plantation. In the 1800s, ships arrived to take wood from Jaraguá bay. The city grew by exporting sugar, tobacco, and coconut. It became a small village on December 5, 1815. Later, it became the capital of Alagoas in 1839.

The Port of Jaraguá helped the city grow into a large port.

Many different industries help the city work today. Some people make sugar and ethanol from sugarcane. Other workers make chemical products from brine. This brine comes from deep wells near the city. Tourism is also a very big part of the economy. Visitors come from many places like Italy, France, and Germany. They enjoy the coconut palm trees and the beautiful beaches.
