Alagoas is actually the second smallest state in all of Brazil. It is only larger than the state of Sergipe. Even though it is small, it is a very important part of the country.

The land in Alagoas changes as you move away from the sea. Near the coast, you will find beautiful beaches and fringing reefs.

Behind these beaches, green hills rise up from the sand. These hills get enough rain to support farming and parts of the Atlantic Forest. Much of this area is used for growing sugarcane.

If you travel much farther inland, the land becomes the Sertão. This is a high and dry region. It is filled with the caatinga, which is a type of scrubland with many thorny plants.

The history of Alagoas is quite long and interesting. For many years, it was part of the larger territory of Pernambuco. It finally became its own independent area in 1817. Long ago, the Dutch invaded the region in 1631 to manage the sugar trade. They built a fort in the town of Penedo on the São Francisco River. The Dutch were eventually pushed out in 1646. Many early towns, like Porto Calvo, grew because of the sugar industry.
